Description
Vast skies, endless steppe, ancient monasteries: Travel to the heart of Mongolia, to the former capital of Karakorum. This includes Erdene Zuu, the Orkhon Valley and a visit to nomads.
Day 1: Ulaanbaatar – Karakorum
You will leave the capital and head west into the central steppe. Along the way, you will stop at the sand dunes of Elsen Tasarkhai, where you can explore the landscape on foot. You will then visit the Uvgunt Monastery, picturesquely situated in the mountains. In the evening, you will arrive in Karakorum.
Day 2: Erdene Zuu, Orkhon Valley and Deer Stones
The second day is the highlight of the trip. You will visit Erdene Zuu, the oldest Buddhist monastery in Mongolia, with its white stupas and extensive monastery wall. After that, you will drive to the Orkhon Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with green pastures and the Orkhon River. Here you will also see the deer stones, millennia-old stone monuments with engraved deer motifs. Back in Karakorum, you will visit the museum and learn more about the history of the Mongol Empire.
Day 3: Return to Ulaanbaatar
On the way back to the capital, you will visit a nomadic family. You will get an insight into traditional life in a yurt, experience Mongolian hospitality, and learn more about animal husbandry and everyday life in the steppe. In the evening, you will arrive back in Ulaanbaatar.
This tour is ideal for anyone who wants to experience the culture, history and nature of Mongolia in just a few days.
