Description

Set off from Dunhuang with a customized private itinerary, heading all the way to Yardang National Geopark to uncover the amazing geological wonders crafted by nature.
Your private tour will start with a convenient pick-up at your designated hotel in Dunhuang. The journey from Dunhuang to Yardang National Geopark covers approximately 160 kilometers, taking about 2.5 hours. You’ll travel along a route echoing the ancient Silk Road, with the vast Gobi Desert stretching on both sides—passing sparse desert vegetation and wind-scoured rock outcrops. The guide will share insights into the Gobi’s ecology, Silk Road history here, and basic Yardang landform knowledge to help you understand the destination.
Upon arrival at the park entrance, the guide will help you complete ticket check-in (tickets are included in the tour fee; the fee covers park entry and sightseeing bus fares). They will then briefly introduce Yardang National Geopark: one of China’s most famous Yardang landform scenic areas, formed by millions of years of wind and water erosion. It covers a large area with landforms shaped like ships, lions, peacocks, and more, and is nicknamed “the Devil’s City” for the howling winds through rock formations at night.
You’ll first take the park’s official sightseeing bus to explore the core north area, stopping at four key spots in sequence. The first is “Golden Lion Welcoming Guests”—a Yardang formation resembling an upright lion, glowing golden under the sun. Next is “Sphinx”, with a sharp profile carved by wind that resembles the Great Sphinx of Giza. The third is “Graceful Peacock”, looking like a peacock spreading its tail (one of the park’s most photographed spots). The last bus stop is “West Sea Fleet”—a cluster of long, narrow Yardang formations resembling warships sailing on the Gobi “sea”. If you want deeper exploration, the guide can arrange an off-road vehicle to visit the south area (not accessible by sightseeing bus), which has more dramatic, less-visited Yardang formations (extra fee applies).
Lunch is not included in the tour package. When you’re ready for lunch, the guide will recommend nearby dining options, and you’ll cover the meal costs yourself.
After lunch, you’ll board the vehicle to return to Dunhuang via the same route—letting you revisit Gobi scenery in the afternoon sun (which casts longer, more serene shadows). The driver will ensure a comfortable ride, and the guide can share more Dunhuang culture stories or answer remaining questions. The tour ends with a drop-off at your original Dunhuang hotel.
