Embark on a day hike to Namobuddha Monastery, a peaceful journey back in time to learn about Buddhism. Escape the hustle and bustle of Kathmandu and see the Himalayas up close.
Begin your adventure with a drive from Kathmandu to Panauti, taking 1 to 1.5 hours. Start your hike from Panauti Town, following dirt paths, stone steps, terraced fields, and forest trails. The hike lasts around 3-5 hours, depending on your pace and stops, with a maximum elevation of approximately 1,750 meters (5,741 feet).
Visit the Thrangu Tashi Yangtse Monastery, a large Tibetan Buddhist complex on top of a hill. Admire its tiered golden roofs, colorful mandalas, and central gathering hall that can hold hundreds of monks. Listen to the deep, echoing sounds of morning or evening prayers, cymbals crashing, horns blowing, and low, collective chanting.
Continue to the Namobuddha stupa, one of Nepal’s most important holy sites. Learn about the legend of Prince Mahasattva, who sacrificed himself to save a hungry tigress and her cubs. Walk around the stupa, believed to hold the bones and hair of the kind prince, and gain good fortune.
