Description

Auckland’s birdlife and historic treasures tour. Walk the Okura Bush (forest birds), see Coastal Godwits, visit the Clifftop Muriwai Gannet Colony, and lunch at New Zealand’s oldest riverside tavern.
Escape the city and discover some of Auckland’s most fascinating birdlife, landscapes, and historic treasures on this half-day guided nature experience.

Begin with a peaceful walk through the native forest of Okura Bush (tui, fantail, pigeons & other birds), where towering trees, regenerating bush, and coastal ecosystems provide habitat for a variety of native birds. Continue to the Okura Estuary for shorebird viewing, a haven for migratory and resident species, while learning about the area's rich ecological significance. Along the way, enjoy views of the historic Dacre Cottage, one of Auckland's oldest surviving settler homes.

After your morning in nature, relax with lunch (not included in price) at the iconic The Riverhead, New Zealand's oldest riverside tavern, established in 1857 and steeped in local history.

The journey then heads to Auckland’s spectacular west coast and the world-renowned Muriwai Gannet Colony. Witness thousands of Australasian gannets nesting on dramatic coastal cliffs while enjoying breathtaking views of the Tasman Sea. Your guide will share insights into the birds' remarkable migrations, breeding behaviours, and the unique geology of the rugged coastline.

On our tour you will have a more diverse birding experience, seeing both the West Coast Tasman Sea and the East Coast Pacific Ocean.

This relaxed and informative experience combines native forest, estuary birdlife, colonial heritage, coastal scenery, and one of New Zealand’s most impressive wildlife encounters—all within easy reach of central Auckland.
