Description
Sail through the glorious Dutch Golden Age: the world-famous canal belt, its merchant palaces and leaning canal houses, and the untold story of the fortune that built them — all with a live guide.
Amsterdam's canal belt is the masterpiece of the Dutch Golden Age: a ring of water lined with merchant palaces and tall, leaning canal houses, built in a single century when this small city was the richest place on earth. Most cruises sail past it. On this one, you get the story.
The glorious Golden Age: In the 1600s Amsterdam invented the modern world: the first stock exchange, the first multinational company, and a harbour so busy it was called the warehouse of the world. The fortune poured into the canal ring, one of the most ambitious city plans ever built, and into the studios of Rembrandt and Vermeer. Your local live guide brings that century back to life on the water where it happened: the grand houses of the Golden Bend, the warehouses with their hoisting hooks, the hidden courtyards, and the church towers that still set the skyline.
Learn to read the buildings: Every landmark you pass gets explained, live, as you sail by. Why do the facades lean forward? What does the top of a house say about the family that built it? Why is there a hook on nearly every roof, and why are the houses so narrow? By the end you'll see the canal belt the way an Amsterdammer does.
Both sides of the story: The same fortune that built the canal ring came from the East and West India Companies: spice monopolies, colonial rule and the trade in enslaved people. Amsterdam is open about this today; some of its museums have rethought the name "Golden Age" and the city has formally apologised for its role in slavery. Your guide gives you both halves, on the same buildings: the merchant's palace, and the money that paid for it. You leave with the real picture, not the postcard.
Not a floating bus, you sail on a small electric boat with a maximum of 28 guests and a guide who talks with you, not at a crowd. Just 70 minutes on the water, a relaxed atmosphere, and time to ask whatever you're curious about. We also offer an additional cheese-tasting package, accompanied by stories about the Dutch cheese culture.
The route takes in the Amstel River, Herengracht, Keizersgracht, Prinsengracht, and the Golden Bend. Commentary is live in English.
