Description
Operation Market Garden was an Allied operation in September 1944 aimed at ending World War II quickly by capturing key bridges in the Netherlands and crossing the Rhine into Germany.
Operation Market Garden was a large-scale Allied military operation during World War II, carried out between 17 and 25 September 1944. The plan aimed to end the war quickly by creating a direct route through the Netherlands into Germany. By capturing a series of bridges, the Allies hoped to cross the Rhine River and advance into the industrial heart of Germany.
The operation consisted of two coordinated parts. Market was the airborne phase, involving American, British, and Polish paratroopers who were dropped behind enemy lines to seize key bridges over rivers and canals. Garden was the ground offensive, in which British armored forces advanced north from Belgium along a single narrow road to link up with the airborne troops.
After 9 days of fighting the operation was called off. The bridge at Arnhem appeared to be "A bridge too far" and the river Waal at Nijmegen became the new front line. From here, but after the "Battle of the Bulge" and the "Battle of The Schelde" the liberation of Europe proceeded from here again with "The Rhineland Offensive" from March 8 1945.
In todays tour you will be picked up at your hotel after which we will drive to the Province of North Brabant and the little village of Eerde. Here were the dropping zones of the 501st paratrooper infantry, part of the 101st Airborne Division, the "Screaming Eagles."
From Eerde we will follow the route that the allied forces took on their way up North to the last bridge at Arnhem. This route was called Hell's Highway."
On our way up North you will see historic sites of the operation and you will get all the relevant information on the operation in detail. We will cross all three bij Dutch Rivers (twice) and will also pay a visit to the Liberation Museum.
And I have a fantastic location for lunch for you as well (if available).
We will drive in a spacious SUV Volkswagen Sportsvan.
