Description

We'll ride uphill on one of the steepest railways in Germany. Afterwards, we'll hike the route and have fantastic views of viaducts, tunnels, and finally the Rhine Valley.
Distance: 16 km Elevation gain: 200 m Elevation loss: 530 m Estimated duration: 5.5 hours

We'll meet at Bürgermeister Syree Platz in front of Boppard train station and enjoy the steep route with its tunnels and viaducts on the Hunsrückbahn RB37.

The building of the Emmelshausen station is designed in a typical style for the railway line and the construction period and is now used as a museum of the Hunsrück Railway, which is usually only open on the first Sunday of the month between May and October. We'll get an impression from the outside and head out right away.

On the first section, we'll follow the railway line sometimes closer, sometimes further, and get a good insight into the work of the track builders at the beginning of the twentieth century. What appeared to be a flat ride from the train is a plateau repeatedly furrowed by streams flowing from the Moselle, which we experience as constantly short ascents and descents while hiking. We'll see the railway line on an embankment, on bridges, or "down" in breaches worked into the rock. The rich forests of the Vorderhunsrück are always with us.

At the Fleckertshöhe stop, we'll see a single-track stop with two platforms. We'll try to understand this oddity on the spot.

Now it's moving along quickly; the landscape is actually flat and we share the path with cyclists along the railway line and the Hunsrückhöhenstrasse to Boppard-Buchholz station.

Now the descent begins, which first takes us comfortably over well-developed forest paths to Liesenfeld's hut. Here, we'll enjoy the fantastic view of the Hubertusviadukt during an extended rest. Like everywhere at photo points along the route, we can see from the timetable posted there when the next train will pass through. It's worth the wait, a great motif.

Now it's a steep descent through the Hubertus Gorge, along the "Mistlochgraben." We're now going under the impressive Hubertusviadukt. Then it's uphill until we can see the Hunsrück Railway again above the Talberg Tunnel.

Now follow the great viewpoints of the Elfenlay; we'll see Boppard and the beautiful Rhine Valley from different perspectives, before we approach the Hunsrück Railway again for the last time and decide at the entrance of the Mühl Valley where to stop for a break in Boppard.

The tour is rated as moderately difficult. It's a hiking trail that's sometimes steep and narrow. There's a risk of falling. Basic surefootedness and a good sense of direction are an advantage. You'll need appropriate footwear and clothing. Please bring enough water and food for the rest stop.
