In one afternoon you can stand in front of an earthquake-ravaged Gothic revival, and then walk ten minutes to a working cathedral built out of cardboard tubes. That gap - between the city that was and the city being built in its place - is the most interesting thing happening in New Zealand right now, and almost nobody is telling visitors about it properly.

That's what this walk is for.

Your guide is Jo, presenter of the YouTube travel series This Uncharted World, who has spent years finding the parts of Christchurch that don't make it into the guidebooks. Over three hours and about five and a half kilometres of flat, easy central-city walking, she'll take you through Christchurch with a few dozen stories along the way.

On the walk you'll see:
    •    New Regent Street - a pastel Spanish Mission arcade built as a bet against the Great Depression, and the heritage tram that still runs past it
    •    The Arts Centre - 22 Gothic buildings, including the mesmerising observatory that survived the quakes
    •    ChristChurch Cathedral and the Cardboard Cathedral - A stark contrast of architecture and a vision of new and old colliding
    •    The Antigua Boat Sheds - 1882, still doing exactly the job they were built for
    •    Te Pae, Te Kaha and the new city - half a billion dollars of rebuild standing on ground that has been a gathering place since around 1000 AD
    •    High Street's street art precinct, finishing at the Bridge of Remembrance

You'll eat and drink along the way, and it's all included. A scoop of ice cream from Rollickin' Gelato on New Regent Street - hokey pokey or lolly cake - about as New Zealand as it gets. A proper sit-down rest stop midway at C1 Espresso, a 1932 Art Deco post office that still fires food around the room through its original pneumatic tubes, where your hot or cold drink is waiting. And a snack or sweet treat later on.

The 2011 earthquakes are part of this story and we don't skirt around them, but we handle them the way locals do: honestly, briefly, and with respect. This is a walk about a city that got back up.

Bring comfortable shoes, a jacket for Canterbury's weather, and curiosity. We'll bring the rest.
