Description
Discover the origin of Arequipa's ashlar, explore historic quarries, admire volcanoes, travel through the Quebrada de Culebrillas, and learn about ancient Andean petroglyphs.
Explore one of the most fascinating cultural routes in Arequipa and discover the origin of ashlar, the white volcanic stone that gave the city its famous title of "White City." This experience combines history, tradition, volcanic landscapes, and archaeological remains in a unique tour of the city's surroundings.
The adventure begins with a visit to the traditional district of Cayma, where you can appreciate its picturesque main square and its historic church, a representative example of local architecture. Afterwards, you'll stop at a strategic vantage point from where you'll enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the three most iconic volcanoes of Arequipa: Misti, Chachani, and Pichu Pichu.
You'll continue to the impressive Añashuayco Quarry, the main source of the ashlar used in the construction of many historical sights in Arequipa. Here you'll learn about the work of the master stonemasons and observe the traditional techniques of extracting, shaping, and mega-carving this unique volcanic stone. You can also admire huge sculptures and carvings made directly on the walls of the quarry.
The tour continues to the mysterious Quebrada de Culebrillas, a small natural canyon sculpted by the passage of water over thousands of years. During a hike through this stunning landscape, you'll see how the rock walls progressively rise, creating a unique setting for exploration and photography.
At the end of the tour, you'll discover ancient petroglyphs attributed to the Wari culture, important evidence of the civilizations that inhabited this region before the arrival of the Incas. You will also learn about the traditional apachetas, mounds of stones placed by Andean travelers as a symbol of gratitude to nature and to attract good fortune.
This excursion offers a different perspective of Arequipa, allowing you to learn about the geological, cultural, and artistic history behind the stone that characterizes the city. An ideal experience for those looking to combine stunning landscapes, cultural heritage, and ancient traditions in a single activity.
