Description
Discover the wonders of the Amazon rainforest on a 4-day tour from Cusco. Explore Manu National Park, spot wildlife, and stay in eco-lodges surrounded by pristine rainforest.
Day 1: Cusco – Ninamarca – Paucartambo – San Pedro – Manu National Park
Begin your adventure early in the morning with a private transfer from Cusco. Your first stop is Ninamarca, where you’ll visit the mysterious pre Inca Chullpas (funerary towers) amid stunning Andean landscapes.
Next, continue to Paucartambo, a charming colonial town celebrated for its vibrant culture and traditions. Enjoy breakfast while exploring its picturesque streets before ascending to Acjanaco Pass at 3,850 meters, the official entrance to Manu National Park. Here, enjoy breathtaking views of the cloud forest below.
As you descend into the lush forest, keep an eye out for colorful birds such as quetzals, oropendolas, and Peru’s national bird, the cock-of-the-rock. With some luck, you may even spot the elusive spectacled bear. After a delicious lunch in San Pedro, arrive at your eco-lodge, surrounded by the soothing sounds of nature.
Day 2: Eco-Lodge – Madre de Dios River – Machuwasi Lake
Wake up to the calls of jungle birds and enjoy breakfast before heading to a nearby viewpoint to spot hummingbirds, macaws, and toucans. Then, drive to Atalaya Port, the gateway to the upper Madre de Dios River, where you’ll board a traditional wooden boat with life jackets and boots provided.
Cruise along the river, observing wildlife along the banks, including monkeys and capybaras. Arrive at a new eco-lodge for lunch and a short rest. In the afternoon, explore Machuwasi Lake via jungle trail and canoe, where you may encounter giant otters, camungos, and herons. Climb a watchtower to admire ancient trees, then enjoy a night walk to spot caimans and other nocturnal creatures.
Day 3: Eco-Lodge – Macaw Clay Lick – Centenary Trees
Begin the day before sunrise with a boat ride to Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick, witnessing flocks of macaws, parrots, and parakeets feeding on mineral rich clay, a truly unforgettable spectacle.
After breakfast, explore jungle trails to discover the towering ceiba trees (over 60 m) and learn about medicinal plants and traditional forest practices from your guide. In the afternoon, enjoy piranha fishing in a peaceful lagoon and witness the Amazon sunset. For those with energy, join a night walk to see frogs, insects, and other nocturnal wildlife.
Day 4: Eco Lodge – Atalaya – Cusco
After breakfast, take a final boat ride along the Madre de Dios River, soaking in the jungle sunrise and the Amazon basin’s tranquility. Return to Atalaya Port, where your private transport will take you back to Cusco. Stop at Acjanaco Pass for lunch and last photos of the forest, witnessing the jungle gradually give way to the Andes. Arrival in Cusco is around 6:00 p.m., marking the end of a transformative adventure through Peru’s most spectacular landscapes.
