Description

Trade, power and prayer: step into Gdańsk as it was 600 years ago and follow the merchants, Teutonic Knights and monks whose ambitions shaped the city's streets, walls and churches.
Long before it became a city of Renaissance façades and Golden Age wealth, Gdańsk was shaped by three powerful forces: the merchants who made it rich, the knights who ruled it, and the monks who prayed within its walls. On this walk we follow their traces through the streets of the Old and Main Town.

We will visit places where Hanseatic traders loaded grain, timber and amber onto ships bound for Bruges and London, and look at how the harbour and the Crane made the city one of the busiest ports of the Baltic. We will talk about the Teutonic Knights, who seized Gdańsk in 1308 and left their mark on the city through the Great Mill and the remains of their castle, and about the long, uneasy relationship between the townspeople and the Order. Along the way we will step into the world of the Dominicans, Franciscans and other religious communities, whose churches and cloisters shaped the rhythm of medieval town life.

Expect stories of trade and rivalry, faith and power, and the everyday lives of the people who built one of the greatest cities of the medieval Baltic.
