Pico do Areeiro to Ponta São Lourenço: East 4x4 Expedition

Begin with a stop at a scenic viewpoint overlooking Funchal. Capture your first photos of the day, with sweeping views of the city and the ocean. Drive along a picturesque regional road before heading onto a dirt track that leads to a charming hidden bar. Taste an authentic poncha, Madeira’s traditional sugarcane rum drink, freshly prepared the local way.

Next, climb through the green highlands of Montado do Pereiro and Poiso, reaching Pico do Areeiro, the third highest peak on the island at 1818 meters. From the top, enjoy incredible panoramic views above the clouds.

As you descend, drive toward Ribeiro Frio along scenic mountain roads with another short off-road section. In Ribeiro Frio, see the local trout farm and, if you wish, take a peaceful walk through the forest to the famous Balcões viewpoint. Your guide will meet you at the end of the trail.

Back in the jeep, continue with an exciting off-road drive through the heart of the Laurissilva forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Follow remote forest trails only known by local mountain lovers as you head towards Faial.

In Santana, visit the island’s famous thatched houses, known as Madeira traditional houses, one of Madeira’s most iconic symbols. Enjoy a well-deserved lunch at a typical local restaurant (lunch not included).

After lunch, stop at the Guindaste viewpoint, where a glass platform offers breathtaking views over the rugged north coast. It’s the perfect spot to take photos and soak in the Atlantic atmosphere.

Continue to some iconic roads on Porto da Cruz Village

Your final stop is the dramatic Ponta de São Lourenço, a unique and semi-arid peninsula with stunning rocky cliffs and wild landscapes. The scenery here is unlike any other part of the island and offers a spectacular end to your tour.

From there, relax and enjoy the ride back to your accommodation, taking in the last views of the island after a day filled with adventure and discovery.
