Description
Journey beyond Cusco's classic routes to Taqrachullo, Maukallaqta and K'anamarca in the Espinar highlands. Stop at Garganta del Diablo and admire the Three Canyons of Suykutambo.
Leave Cusco before sunrise and journey south into the highlands of Espinar for a full-day expedition through archaeological sites, dramatic rock formations and landscapes far beyond Cusco's traditional tourist circuit.
Pickup takes place from hotels within Cusco Historic Center between 2:30 and 3:00 AM. Travel south for approximately five hours toward Espinar, passing through Sicuani without stopping. On arrival in Espinar, enjoy an Andean breakfast before continuing toward the Suykutambo area.
Along the way, stop at Garganta del Diablo for photographs and views of the surrounding high-Andean landscape before reaching Taqrachullo, also known as Maria Fortaleza.
Explore Taqrachullo with your guide for approximately 1 to 1.5 hours. Set high above the surrounding valleys, this remarkable pre-Hispanic archaeological complex preserves numerous structures that reveal the long cultural history of the area. From its elevated setting, admire panoramic views of the spectacular Three Canyons of Suykutambo.
Continue to Maukallaqta Archaeological Site in Espinar for an approximately one-hour guided visit. Walk through the archaeological complex while learning about the ancient K'ana societies and the cultural heritage of this part of the southern Andes.
After visiting Maukallaqta, return to Espinar for an Andean lunch before beginning the journey back toward Cusco.
Shortly after leaving Espinar, make the final archaeological visit of the day at K'anamarca, another important pre-Hispanic complex of the province. Explore the site with your guide, appreciate its archaeological remains and take time for photographs before continuing the return journey.
Travel back toward Cusco, arriving between 8:00 and 8:30 PM after a full-day journey through some of Espinar's most distinctive archaeological and natural landscapes. Breakfast and lunch in Espinar are included as operational meal stops.
