Description
Discover Bern's queer history between Marzili, the view of the Federal Parliament Building, and the UNESCO-listed Old Town. Experience activism, media, the Pronoun Station, and contemporary cultural venues.
Explore Bern's queer history in places where it has often been hidden: along the Aare River and through the UNESCO-listed Old Town. On this 2–2.5-hour walking tour, an LGBTQ+ or queer-friendly guide will show you how the community developed in the federal capital, how it made a political impact, and how it remains visible to this day. You will gain insights into 50 years of the movement's history and cultural development, as well as up-to-date insider tips on places frequented by the community. The route is approximately 1.9 miles long and is easy to walk, with gentle inclines when climbing into the Old Town.
The walking tour starts at Läuferplatz in the Matten district, Bern's “other” neighborhood. From here, you will follow the Aareweg and discuss the body, freedom, and queer presence in public spaces. In Marzili, you will learn about meeting places, summer culture, and how waterfront locations established themselves as safe spaces. Next, you'll continue to the Bundeshausblick, where the focus is on political milestones, from referendums to acts of activism that have shaped rights and visibility. In the old town, you will discover bars and media and cultural venues that facilitated dialogue and strengthened identity. An interactive language station invites you to engage in conversation about pronouns and identity and to practice inclusive language in a hands-on way.
Finally, you will arrive at the Dalmazi Bridge, which overlooks the Aare River. Here, the tour ends in a central location, which is ideal for the rest of your day. Armed with the tips you've gathered, you can continue exploring the Marzili, the Old Town, or the Aare Promenade from here. Afterward, if you like, you can plan an aperitif or sample Bernese specialties such as Züpfe, Rösti, or a Mandelbärli at a nearby bakery [recommended, not part of the tour].
