Immerse yourself in Ugandan culture with a hands-on craft workshop in Jinja. Learn traditional barkcloth painting and basket weaving techniques and create your own souvenirs.
Begin your experience with a traditional welcome drink, such as hibiscus or ginger tea. Meet your artisan instructors from a local women's cooperative and learn about Ugandan crafts and their cultural significance. Select your materials and set up your workspace.
Next, dive into a barkcloth painting session. Discover the history of barkcloth, Uganda's UNESCO-recognized textile, and learn about natural dye preparation and color meanings. Watch a demonstration of traditional patterns, including geometric symbols, nature-inspired designs, and modern adaptations. Then, create your own barkcloth painting to take home.
Continue with a basket weaving workshop. Get an introduction to natural weaving materials and learn the basic coil weaving technique. Create a small basket or coaster and learn about sustainable harvesting practices.
Finish your experience by displaying and discussing your finished pieces. Receive a certificate of participation and have the opportunity to purchase additional artisan work. Take a group photo with your creations.
