Description

Long before the infamous 1692 Salem witchcraft trials, the shadows of witchcraft loomed over Boston. Come hear the tales of witchcraft, superstition & witch executions that gripped the city of Boston
Everyone has heard about the 1692 Salem Witchcraft Trials, but Boston was the site of the second witchcraft execution the American colonies in 1648. Over the next 40 years, four more local women faced the gallows for reasons that are hard to fathom today.
On this 90-minute tour, you will:
Learn the tragic story of Goody Glover who was executed for witchcraft in Massachusetts in 1688 four years before the Salem hysteria erupted. This may have been the case that led to the Salem trials.
Discover the pivotal role played by Reverends Increase and Cotton Mather and how Boston’s religious elite influenced the accusations that would eventually impact Salem.
Walk the streets of downtown Boston to see where victims lived, hear the stories that got them condemned and the outrageous reasons how they were accused of witchcraft. And there were some local leaders who secretly helped the accused escape.
See the location of the former jail where local witches, criminals and pirates were kept throughout the 1600s as well as many accused Salem witches in 1692.
We'll finish in the North End where a famous house stands today with a secret history as to what was there before it.
The tour will cover the beginnings of witchcraft in the colonies starting in 1626. There were accusations in nearly every colony as the 17th-century mindset definitely believed that pacts with the devil were a tangible threat to the community.
