Step inside the Aiken-Rhett House Museum and discover a powerful and unusually intact portrait of life in antebellum Charleston. Expanded by Governor William Aiken Jr. and his family in the 1830s and again in the 1850s, the house preserves original furnishings, finishes, and historic spaces that together reveal the world of an elite Charleston household.

Visit the house under Historic Charleston Foundation’s preserved “as-found” approach, which leaves much of the structure and its contents in the condition in which they survived. As you move through the property, see rooms, architectural details, and surfaces that have remained largely unaltered since the mid 19th century. The restored Art Gallery offers a contrast to the rest of the house and displays paintings and sculptures collected by the Aiken family during their European Grand Tour. For those choosing the combo option, the experience also includes admission to the Nathaniel Russell House, another important Charleston historic house museum known for its refined Federal-style architecture and decorative interiors.

The experience also includes access to the property’s surviving outbuildings, including the kitchen, laundry, carriage block, and the original quarters where enslaved people lived. These spaces, preserved with original paint, floors, and fixtures, offer important insight into the everyday realities of the enslaved Africans who lived and worked on site while maintaining the household and serving the Aiken family and their guests.

The house remained in the Aiken family for 142 years before opening as a museum in 1975. Today, a visit offers the chance to engage with Charleston’s layered history through original interiors, preserved service buildings, and the stories tied to the people who lived and labored here.
