Description

Discover Rakiura Stewart Island’s native wildlife on this guided adventure. Embark on a distinct way to connect with the island’s vibrant ecosystem, cultural heritage, and natural beauty.
Wild Kiwi Encounter

Embark on an unforgettable journey into the heart of Rakiura/Stewart Island’s natural world. Adventure begins 1.5hrs before night falls with a scenic pre-sunset cruise, spotting rare seabirds and marine life as you navigate around nearby islands. Look out for penguins, albatross, seals and more! As dusk settles, arrive at Little Glory Cove for a guided torchlit walk through forest and beach in search of the elusive tokoeka (southern brown kiwi), with expert insights and stunning starlit scenery.

Wild Kiwi and Culture Encounter

Explore Oneke as day turns to night. "The Neck" is a special place, in Māori and European heritage, wild kiwi, and breathtaking coastal views. Hear stories of the island’s past before setting off on a night-time kiwi search. Enjoy a warm drink in a traditional whare before cruising back to Oban under the night sky.

Please note: a reasonable level of fitness is required for both of our wild kiwi encounters (total walking time approximately 2 hours). The walking track can be uneven and muddy at times; therefore, please ensure you wear adequate footwear and are dressed for warmth, including a wind and waterproof jacket

You have a higher chance of finding kiwis with our expert staff. However, kiwis are wild and unpredictable, and there is no 100% guarantee they will appear. Their rareness and the thrill of searching are what makes the experience special and enjoyable, so we cannot offer refunds if there is no sighting. Instead, $20 per person will be donated to conservation projects at Little Glory Cove, so we can continue to increase the chances of seeing the incredible tokoeka in the wild.
