Why This Hike is Different

Most visitors to Zhangjiajie tick off the sights via cable cars and elevators—efficient, but you see the park through a window, not through your own effort. This 2-day itinerary is designed for travelers who want to feel the climb, earn the view, and connect with nature on its own terms.

We do use the Bailong Elevator (it's an engineering marvel you shouldn't miss), but the rest? You'll hike up Yellow Stone Village (Huangshizhai) via the ancient mountain stairs, and you'll descend from Tianzi Mountain through the forest trail down to Water Winding Four Gates (Shuirao Simen) . You'll walk the entire 7km Golden Whip Stream valley—flat, lush, and utterly magical.

The Itinerary

Day 1: Conquer Yellow Stone Village + Golden Whip Stream

Start at the South Gate (best access point for hiking Huangshizhai)

Hike up to Yellow Stone Village (~3,000+ stairs, 2–3 hours)—panoramic views of the peak forest from above

Cable car down (save your knees for day 2)

Trek the full Golden Whip Stream (~7km, 2–3 hours flat walk)—towering sandstone pillars, crystal-clear stream, and macaques watching from the trees


Day 2: Bailong Elevator + Tianzi Mountain Descent

Enter via East Gate, take the eco-shuttle to the Bailong Elevator—ride the world's tallest outdoor elevator up to Yuanjiajie (88 seconds, 326 meters)

Explore Yuanjiajie (the "Avatar Hallelujah Mountain" area)—scenic viewpoints before the crowds arrive

Shuttle to Tianzi Mountain

Hike DOWN from Tianzi Mountain via the stairs to Water Winding Four Gates—this is the hardcore leg. ~4 hours of stairs, rewarding views, and a real sense of achievement

Stroll the Ten-Mile Natural Gallery (or take the mini-train if your legs are done)

Exit via East Gate
