Take the funicular up to Fourvière (ticket included), discover the basilica, the Roman theater and the dungeon of the early Christians, then walk down to Old Lyon and its traboules.
Lyon keeps its best-kept secrets hidden: passages behind ordinary doors, Renaissance courtyards behind austere façades, and a Roman city beneath a hill. This 3.5-hour tour opens these doors one by one, from the top of Fourvière to the heart of Old Lyon.

Meet at Place Saint-Jean, in front of the cathedral and its approximately three hundred sculpted medallions. We take the funicular, the "ficelle" (literally, "rope") of the people of Lyon, ticket included, to reach the hill in just a few minutes.

At the top, the whole city stretches out before you: the Rhône and Saône rivers, the Presqu'île between them and, when the air is clear, Mont Blanc. From the esplanade, your live guide will tell you about the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière, and then you can visit it at your leisure.

We then head down to the Roman theaters, where Lugdunum, the capital of Gaul founded in 43 B.C., used to be packed to capacity. We sit on the terraces, facing the city, and go back two thousand years.

Just a stone's throw away, the Musée de l'Antiquaille preserves the memory of the early Christians of Lyon: the dungeon known as Saint Pothin's and the Crypt of the Martyrs of 177. Your guide will tell you its history before you go inside (admission €5, to be paid on site).

Then we head to Old Lyon on foot, taking the uphill streets. Rue du Bœuf, the Tour Rose, and then the Longue Traboule, which passes through four buildings from street to street. On Rue Saint-Jean, we'll stop in front of the window of the Petit Musée de Guignol, where there will be time to hear the story of how a tooth puller invented the most famous puppet in France. The tour ends at Place du Change, where Renaissance bankers made the city's fortune.
