Andechs Monastery: Discover medical history with virtual reality

TIMERIDE Alte Apotheke Andechs, located in the immediate vicinity of the pilgrimage church, brings the historic pharmacy building of Andechs Monastery back to life after more than 200 years.
In the original rooms of the former monastery pharmacy, TIMERIDE uses detailed decorations to bring to life an authentic reconstruction of a pharmacy from the late 18th century. Historical instruments, countless medicines, ingredients, and fragrant herbs create a unique atmosphere, which is further enhanced by the original ornate doors and colorful Baroque ceiling frescoes.

A tour of the ground floor of the pharmacy building takes guests to four interactive stations where they can use various media to immerse themselves in the history of early modern pharmacy and medicine at Andechs Monastery.

Upon entering the pharmacy building, guests find themselves in the first room, where both the reception and the conclusion of the tour take place with a VR experience. Here, guests receive a brief overview of the experience and access to an audio guide from the so-called time travel companion. This runs individually on the guests' mobile devices, guiding them through the stations and enabling them to take an independent tour of the pharmacy's experience rooms. The main role on the audio guide's soundtrack is played by the narrator Heinrich Breitenacher – the last monk pharmacist on the Holy Mountain more than 200 years ago.
