Detailed Itinerary:
We start at Togetsukyo Bridge, the iconic landmark spanning the Hozugawa River. Pause to soak in sweeping mountain views across the valley; this historic riverside spot has long been favoured by nobles for moon-viewing since Japan’s Heian era.

Next, step into Tenryu-ji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Zen landmark ranking top among Kyoto’s five great Zen temples. Wander its legendary Sogenchi Pond Garden, a masterpiece of landscape design framed by rolling wooded hills, with elegant stone formations reflecting perfectly in still waters.

We then wander toward sacred lesser-known sites. First stands Nonomiya Shrine, distinguished by its rare black timber torii gate. This ancient Shinto sanctuary was once reserved for imperial princesses preparing for religious rituals, famous for wish-making on love and good fortune.

A short stroll leads us to the famous Bamboo Path. Towering bamboo stalks form a lush green tunnel. Listen to the natural rustle of stalks swaying in wind, a nationally recognised acoustic treasure, as you walk away from tourist crowds into quiet woodland serenity.

Continue onwards to Okunoin Shrine, the unique hair sanctuary dedicated to hair health. Visitors write prayers for thick, healthy hair, making this charming small shrine a warm, quirky local hidden gem.

We proceed uphill to Jojakko-ji Temple, perched on the mountain slope. Enjoy sweeping overlook views across there. Its layered maple groves and quiet courtyard offer peaceful seclusion, ideal for escaping busy downtown crowds and capturing seasonal scenery all year round.

The afternoon brings our two signature outdoor experiences.

Board the Sagano romatic Scenic Railway, a vintage slow train winding along the canyon. Glide past steep forest cliffs, catching glimpses of the river far below; every window frames postcard-worthy natural scenery in every season.

Finish the day with the unforgettable Hozugawa Gorge River Drift. Board traditional wooden boats guided by local boatmen, drifting through narrow canyon walls covered in thick green foliage. Feel the cool mountain breeze as you float past jagged rock formations and cascading small waterfalls, wrapping up your day with immersive wilderness fun.
