Leave Brașov in the morning and head north through rolling hills, fields and small villages. Your guide uses the first section of the drive to introduce the Saxon history of Transylvania and explain how fortified churches protected local communities for centuries.
Your first stop is usually Biertan, tucked in a sheltered valley. Climb up to the fortified church, encircled by walls and towers, and step inside the former seat of Transylvania’s Lutheran bishops. Hear how the powerful guilds financed the church, why couples once came here for “marriage prison”, and how the village kept its character through turbulent times. You have time to walk among the ramparts and look down over the red-tiled roofs.
From Biertan, continue towards Sighișoara, a medieval citadel that is still lived in today. Enter through one of the old gates and explore narrow lanes, staircases and small squares. Your guide shows you the main landmarks such as the Clock Tower, the Church on the Hill and the house associated with Vlad Dracul, while also pointing out quiet corners away from the main route. After a short orientation walk, you get free time for lunch, photos, and wandering at your own pace.
In the afternoon, drive across gentle highlands to Viscri, a Saxon village known for its white fortified church and traditional architecture. The last part of the road is on a rural lane, which adds to the feeling of entering a different rhythm of life. Walk up to the church, learn how the community used it for shelter, worship and storage, then enjoy views over the patchwork fields from the defensive walls. Depending on timing, there may be a chance to stop for a coffee or simple snack from local producers.
Throughout the day, the guide balances structured visits with unhurried breaks. Driving segments are broken up with photo stops when possible, and there is time for questions about history, daily life and practical travel tips for the rest of your stay in Romania.
In the late afternoon or early evening, return to Brașov. You arrive back with a clear picture of how these three places fit together: one citadel, two fortified churches, and a shared Saxon story that still shapes Transylvania today.
