From Kigali: 4-Day Akagera Safari and Chimpanzee Trekking

Embark on a 4-day safari adventure in Rwanda. Explore the Akagera National Park, go on a boat cruise, and see the Big Five. Visit the Nyungwe National Park and go on a canopy walk and a chimpanzee trek.

Day 1: Kigali to Akagera National Park
Start your adventure with a pick-up from your hotel in Kigali. Transfer to the park on a 2.5-hour journey from Kigali, driving to the Kayonza district in the Eastern Province of Rwanda. The journey to Akagera National Park will reward you with planned en-route stopovers along the route.

As you arrive at the park, check in to your booked safari accommodation at the lodge, order your lunch, and proceed for a sunset boat ride on Lake Ihema. See aquatic mammals such as hippos and crocodiles in the lake or on the shores. Retire and drive back to the lodge for dinner and rest.

Day 2: Safari Game Drive in Akagera National Park
Start your day with a full-day safari game drive in the park. Order your packed lunch to be eaten later at the picnic area. See the Big Five mammals (lion, rhino, elephant, buffalo, and leopard), antelope, kob, and baboon. Akagera National Park is a varied habitat for wildlife species in Rwanda and a birder's haven with more than 500 bird species in the park.

Later in the afternoon, transfer back to Kigali and drop off at your hotel with the evening at leisure, dinner, and rest.

Day 3: Kigali to Nyungwe National Park
Start your day with a pick-up from your hotel in Kigali. Transfer to Nyungwe National Park. Pass through the beautiful terraced hillsides that characterize much of Rwanda’s landscapes, sighting Kamegeri Rock in Ruhango District.

Upon arrival at the park reception, receive a briefing from the park guides then proceed with a short hike to the Canopy walk adventure for a thrilling experience on a suspended bridge covering 160 m through the lush montane rainforest and 70 m high from the forest floor.

Meet your guide and drive to the hotel, check-in and enjoy property amenities. Spend the evening at leisure, dinner, and rest.

Day 4: Chimpanzee Trekking and Transfer to Kigali
Enjoy an early breakfast at your hotel. Then, embark on a thrilling hike in search of chimpanzee communities. The Rwandan chimpanzee population is thought to consist of approximately 400-500 individuals, confined to the Nyungwe National Park, including a small community in the Cyamudongo Forest.

Prepare to hear these excitable primates before you see them, as their pant-hoots travel through the deep forest. During your hike, you may also spot migratory birdlife including the Ross’ turaco, grey-cheeked hornbill, red-breasted sparrow hawk, and regal sunbird.

After your experiences, your guide will drive you back to Kigali. You'll be dropped off at your hotel/residence or Kigali International Airport.
