From Mayrhofen: Private Sound of Music & Lakes Day Trip

Begin your journey with a pickup from your hotel in Mayrhofen, Finkenberg, Hippach, Ramsau im Zillertal, Zell am Ziller, Aschau, Kaltenbach, Uderns, or Fügen. Settle into a private, air-conditioned car or minivan and head out of the Zillertal, along the Inn Valley and past the Chiemsee Lake to Salzburg. The route passes briefly through Germany, so bring your passport or national ID card. On the way, your guide shares local tips and recommendations for the day.

Arrive at Hellbrunn Palace Park and see the famous glass gazebo from "Sixteen Going on Seventeen." Then, head to Schloss Leopoldskron and view the palace whose lakeside terrace appears as the von Trapp villa, and where the boat scene was filmed.

Next, visit Nonnberg Abbey, the Benedictine convent founded around 714 where the real Maria was a novice and where the nuns sing "Maria" in the film. Take a short uphill walk with views over the old town and visit the abbey church.

Continue to Mirabell Gardens and see the Pegasus fountain, the steps, and the hedge tunnel from "Do-Re-Mi," with the view of Hohensalzburg Fortress. Then, enjoy a scenic drive past Lake Fuschl into the Salzkammergut Lake District, the landscape from the film's opening aerial scenes.

Stop in St. Gilgen on Lake Wolfgang and enjoy a lakeside promenade, the birthplace of Mozart's mother, and time for coffee and cake. Then, drive to Mondsee and visit the Basilica of St. Michael where the film's wedding scene was shot, the old town square, and have lunch by the lake.

Finally, relax on the drive back to the Zillertal and get dropped off at your hotel.

In winter the lakes and villages are often covered in snow, and from late November the Advent markets in St. Gilgen and Mondsee add to the atmosphere: a perfect rest day from skiing.
