From Bad Gastein: Private Salzburg Old Town Day Trip

Begin your day with a pickup from your hotel in Bad Gastein, Bad Hofgastein, Dorfgastein, or Sportgastein. Travel in a private, air-conditioned car or minivan and enjoy a scenic drive out of the Gastein Valley and along the Salzach Valley towards Salzburg.

Stop at the Hohenwerfen Castle viewpoint, a 900-year-old fortress high above the Salzach Valley, for a photo opportunity. Continue to Hellbrunn and walk through the park to the famous Sound of Music gazebo. From April to early November, enjoy the playful trick fountains (ticket not included).

Next, head to the city center and visit Mirabell Gardens, with its flower beds, Pegasus fountain, the Do-Re-Mi steps, and the view of Hohensalzburg Fortress. Then, take a guided walk through Salzburg's old town with your guide. Stroll along Getreidegasse with its wrought-iron shop signs, see Mozart's Birthplace, Salzburg Cathedral, and Residenzplatz, and hear stories about Mozart and the prince-archbishops.

Enjoy free time in the old town for lunch in a traditional Austrian restaurant or coffee house, or take an optional funicular to Hohensalzburg Fortress (ticket not included). Your guide can recommend the best places to visit. Finally, relax on the drive back to your hotel.

From late November to the end of December, the old town hosts the famous Christkindlmarkt on Cathedral and Residenz squares, a perfect winter day away from the ski slopes or the spa. Because the trip is private, timing is flexible.
