Descrizione
The Bayano Caves are breathtaking. They were formed by the erosion of limestone, creating caves, canyons, rivers, and waterfalls. This is one of the most adventurous activities in Panama.
The Bayano Caves are a much-loved, though little-known, tourist attraction near Panama City. These caves are simply breathtaking. To get there, you'll need to drive two hours from Panama City towards the Darien Province. Once you arrive, you'll board a local wooden boat that will take you for thirty minutes across Lake Bayano, passing islands that are actually mountain peaks. Lake Bayano was formed after the construction of a dam on the Bayano River to create a hydroelectric power plant, the second largest in the country, which produces about 16% of Panama's total electricity. It's also a refuge for numerous animal species and an excellent spot for birdwatching.
After crossing this tranquil lake, your adventure in the Bayano Caves will begin. The boat will dock in a marshy valley where you'll walk along the riverbank until you see the welcome sign. Your guide will give you a safety briefing on proper behavior inside the caves. The limestone eroded over centuries, creating the caves and canyons you'll see during the tour. At times, the cave formations allow sunlight to enter, illuminating the interior and creating reflections on the walls. Other parts of the Bayano Caves tour are conducted in darkness, but don't worry, you'll have a headlamp.
Inside the caves, there are waterfalls and rivers, and in some areas, swimming (with a life jacket) may be necessary depending on the water level, which your guide will closely monitor for safety. At the end, you'll return to the boat. Throughout the tour, you may observe animals such as monkeys, capybaras, sloths, caimans, bats, fish, frogs, and more. Upon returning to the meeting point, you can relax, enjoy a meal and use the kayaks on Lake Bayano.
