From Addis Ababa: 3-Day Ethiopia Highlights Adventure

Day 1: Addis Ababa

Begin your adventure in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa. Enjoy panoramic views from Mount Entoto, visit the National Museum to see the famous fossil “Lucy,” and explore the Ethnological Museum.

Wander through Mercato, one of Africa’s largest open-air markets, and visit traditional craft workshops. Take a stroll through local neighborhoods, relax in a café, and experience authentic Ethiopian hospitality.

Choose to participate in a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony, enjoy authentic Ethiopian cuisine at a local restaurant, or end the evening with an optional cultural dinner featuring live music and traditional dances.

Day 2: Bishoftu Crater Lakes

Leave the city behind and explore the beautiful volcanic crater lakes of Bishoftu. Enjoy scenic drives through the Ethiopian Rift Valley, take in beautiful crater lake viewpoints, and choose between flexible lakeside walks or longer hiking options.

Spot flamingos, marabou storks, pelicans, kingfishers, cormorants, herons, and many other bird species. See playful vervet monkeys, take relaxing lakeside photography stops, and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

Optional experiences include tasting freshly grilled fish from the lake at a lakeside restaurant, sampling traditional Ethiopian dishes, and participating in a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony.

Day 3: Blue Nile Gorge or Traditional Rural Market

Choose between dramatic landscapes or authentic rural culture. Travel into the Ethiopian Highlands towards the spectacular Blue Nile Gorge, often called Ethiopia’s Grand Canyon. Take in scenic viewpoints overlooking the Jemma River Valley, visit the historic Portuguese Bridge, and see a seasonal waterfall (best during the rainy season).

Observe gelada baboons on the escarpments and possibly spot olive (savanna) baboons. Admire spectacular landscapes and take advantage of photography opportunities.

Alternatively, depending on the day of your visit (Monday, Thursday, or Friday), explore one of the area’s colorful weekly markets where local communities gather to trade livestock, fresh produce, spices, handmade baskets, pottery, traditional clothing, and household goods.
