Descrizione
Visit Yokosuka on a private day trip to taste navy curry from a 1908 recipe and explore 70 years of Japanese and American naval culture. Cruise the naval harbor when weather and operations allow.
Yokosuka is a port town an hour south of Tokyo where the Japanese navy and the United States Seventh Fleet share the same harbour, and where the food, the shops and the street signs all show it.
We take the harbour cruise first, a 45-minute boat that goes out among the ships themselves: destroyers, submarines at the pier, and whatever American carrier happens to be alongside. It is the only way to see them properly, and the commentary explains what each class of ship is.
Then curry. In 1908 the Imperial Japanese Navy published a recipe book to stop sailors getting beriberi, and the curry in it is the direct ancestor of every plate of Japanese curry sold today. Yokosuka still serves it to the original recipe, with milk and a salad on the side, exactly as the navy specified. Your lunch is included.
Afterwards we walk Dobuita Street, where tailors have been embroidering souvenir jackets for American sailors since the 1940s, and where the bars have English names and Japanese owners.
We finish at Mikasa, the battleship that won the 1905 battle of Tsushima, now preserved in concrete in a park, which you can walk through.
This is a private tour. Only your group.
The harbour cruise does not run in high wind or heavy rain, and it does not run on some Mondays. If it is cancelled on your date we will tell you as early as we can, and you can take a full refund of your booking, guaranteed.
