Follow the legacy of the Knights Templar through Almourol and Tomar on a full-day tour from Lisbon with a local guide.
Your day begins in Lisbon, from where you travel inland towards the Tagus River. The first stop is Almourol Castle, a medieval fortress standing on a small rocky island in the middle of the river. With admission included, you'll visit the castle and take in the views over the Tagus while your guide explains the role this stronghold played in the defence of the region and its connection to the Templars.
Continue to Tomar, the town most closely linked to the Knights Templar in Portugal. Walk through the historic centre and see the Church of São João Baptista on the town's main square, before enjoying free time for lunch at your own pace (lunch is not included).
In the afternoon, head up to the Convent of Christ, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that began as a Templar castle and later became the seat of the Order of Christ. With admission included, explore its round Templar church, its cloisters and its celebrated Manueline architecture, as your guide brings medieval Portuguese history to life.
Before leaving Tomar, stop briefly for a panoramic photo of the town's aqueduct, then relax on the return journey to Lisbon, arriving in the late afternoon.
