Addis Ababa: Horse Ride & Mud Bath

Embark on a day trip from Addis Ababa to Wonchi Crater Lake. Enjoy a horseback ride along the crater's edge, relax in a natural mud bath, and savor a local lunch by the lake.
Begin your day with a morning pickup from your hotel in Addis Ababa. Set off on a scenic drive to Wonchi Crater Lake, passing through the Oromo highlands, rolling farmland, and small villages. Enjoy a peaceful introduction to rural Ethiopia and learn about the area’s geology and local communities.

Arrive at Wonchi by mid-morning and meet with local guides and horse-ride providers at the community tourism office near the crater rim. After a brief safety briefing and horse assignment, enjoy a guided horseback ride along the crater’s edge, passing through grasslands and forested slopes while stopping at key viewpoints overlooking the lake.

After the ride, descend (by horse or on foot) to the crater floor where the natural mud bath and hot springs are located. The grey-colored mud, rich in minerals, is known locally for its soothing effect on skin and muscles. Gently apply it over your arms, legs, and back while avoiding your eyes and mouth. Following the mud treatment, rinse off in the nearby warm natural spring or waterfall.

By early afternoon, enjoy a simple lakeside or lodge lunch featuring local dishes such as kocho-based meals, fresh vegetables, and injera, served with panoramic views of the lake. After meals, there will be time for a short lakeside walk or optional short boat ride to the island/monastery area, depending on the day’s schedule and weather, before starting the drive back to Addis Ababa around 3:00–4:00 PM.
