Descrizione

Discover Lourmarin on a guided tour through its narrow streets, exploring its most charming nooks and crannies.
Meet in front of the Ravi ice cream parlor, in the heart of the village, for an introduction to Lourmarin: a village in the Luberon Regional Nature Park, listed as one of The Most Beautiful Villages of France, which can be recognized from afar by its three steeples – the belfry, the church and the Protestant temple. You will learn about its history, from the medieval town to the artists' village of today.

House of Philippe de Girard. First stop in front of the house of the inventor born in Lourmarin in 1775. In 1810, Napoleon promised one million francs to whoever invented a machine for spinning flax. Philippe de Girard took up the challenge, but never received the prize. A town in Poland, Żyrardów, still bears his name.

The fountain in the square: We then head to the fountain in the square, one of the oldest in the village, which has been classified as a historic monument since 1914.

The covered fountain: Via a side passage, you will reach the inconspicuous covered fountain, a corner of the village that few visitors know about.

The Belfry: We then head up through the narrow streets to the Belfry and its clock, from which the streets of the old village wind their way.

The Church of Saint-André-et-Saint-Trophime: Stop at the village church to learn about the role of the Catholic and Protestant communities in the history of Lourmarin.

The covered passages to the Protestant church: We then take a series of vaulted passages that lead down to the lower part of the village.

The Fountain of the Three Masks: A short stop in front of this 1937 fountain, decorated with three enigmatic faces to which the writer Henri Bosco attributed symbolic meanings.

The Protestant temple: It bears witness to the village's rich Protestant past.

The château. The tour ends in front of the château, which we admire from the outside. Often described as the first Renaissance castle in Provence, it was going to be dismantled for its stones in 1920 when Robert Laurent-Vibert bought it and restored it. He then bequeathed it to be used as an artists' residence, which it still is today. We will discuss the Provence of writers: Albert Camus, who discovered Lourmarin through his teacher Jean Grenier, Henri Bosco, both buried in the village cemetery, and Jean Giono, the great writer from Manosque.

End of the tour: You'll leave with recommendations for the artisans and art galleries that form the soul of the village. If you wish, you can visit the château on your own after the tour (admission not included).
