Descrizione
Explore the Yungang Grottoes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and discover the underground world of Jinhua Palace Geopark Coal Mine on a guided tour.
Day 1 Morning: Yungang Grottoes (World Cultural Heritage)
Start at 8:00 a.m. with a professional guide at Yungang Grottoes. Enter through a Northern Wei-style archway, then walk along a pine-lined stone path. First, visit Caves 1-2: your guide uses a flashlight to show faded murals, telling stories of 1,500-year-old craftsmen who carved them into sandstone.
Next, the iconic Five Tanyao Caves (16-20). The 13.7m-tall seated Buddha in Cave 20 is breathtaking—serene, with detailed robes blending Gandharan and Chinese art. Learn how it modeled Northern Wei emperors.
Then explore Caves 5-6: Cave 5 has a 17m Buddha (look up!), while Cave 6’s 15m pagoda pillar is covered in Buddhist tales. By 11:30 a.m., enjoy local lunch: Datong knife-shaved noodles, Hunyuan cold noodles, and yellow rice cake.
Day 1 Afternoon: Jinhua Palace Geopark Coal Mine
At 1:30 p.m., put on miner gear (helmet with lamp, jacket, boots) and get a safety briefing. Take an underground train to the mine.
First, the Geology Display: see coal samples and learn how coal formed. Then the Mining Simulation Area: compare 19th-century steam-powered tools to modern machines—staff demo how tech improved safety and efficiency.
Visit the Miner’s Life Area: sit on benches and try a simple miner’s meal (steamed buns, pickles, soup). By 4:30 p.m., return to the surface. Tour the Coal Museum (artifacts, interactive exhibits) before leaving at 5:30 p.m. Check into your hotel to rest.
Day 2 Morning: Hanging Temple
Leave the hotel at 8:00 a.m. (1-hour drive). The Hanging Temple clings to a 50m cliff, supported by thin wooden pillars—stunning from afar!
Walk 10 minutes to enter. First, the Thousand Buddha Hall (Ming Dynasty tiny Buddhas). Climb a narrow, slightly wobbly wooden corridor to the Three Religions Hall: statues of Confucius, Laozi, and Buddha show “three religions in harmony.”
Reach the Yuhuang Pavilion for valley views—misty mountains and a stream below. By 11:30 a.m., have lunch: Hengshan wild vegetables, potato noodles, and steamed dumplings.
Day 2 Afternoon: Yingxian Wooden Pagoda
At 1:30 p.m., visit the world’s tallest all-wooden pagoda (67.31m, built 1056, no nails—held by “dougong” brackets!).
At the base, see carved pillars with ancient inscriptions. Learn about its “5 outside, 9 inside” design. Climb steep wooden stairs: Floor 1 has an 11m Buddha; Floors 2-5 have statues, murals, and wind chimes.
On Floor 5’s platform, enjoy panoramic views of Yingxian. By 4:30 p.m., browse souvenirs (wooden models, postcards). Leave at 5:00 p.m.—your unforgettable tour ends here!
