Roman Britain and Hadrian's Wall Private Tour

Journey along segments of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Leave the Lake District for the day and travel towards the Scottish Borders. Along the famous Hadrian's Wall.
Depart from one UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Lake District, to another, Hadrian's Wall. Travel through the valleys and besides the lakes towards Penrith and the north of the country. Continue into the remote Debatable Lands of the Border Reivers, heading to Lanercost Priory. Visit the church within the priory ruins and see Burne Jones windows. It is a remarkably well-preserved 13th-century church. The Augustinian priory of Lanercost stands near Hadrian’s Wall and was much involved in the Anglo-Scottish wars. 

Continue your journey and travel alongside Hadrian’s Wall. Hadrian’s Wall is almost 80 miles long and was the northern boundary of the mighty Roman Empire for around three centuries. It was built by 15,000 men over a 7-year period and comprises of forts, mile castles, and a turret every third of a mile. it stretches from the North Sea to the Irish Sea. It was originally up to 3 meters wide and 5-6 meters high but much of the ruins today are 1-2 meters high. To the south of the wall is the Vallum, a ditch mound designating the south boundary of the militarised zone. Hadrian's Wall was designated a World Heritage Site in 1987. 

The next stop will be the Roman Army Museum, where you have time for lunch at the café. The Roman Army Museum lies on the site of Carvoran Roman Fort, adjacent to sections of Hadrian’s Wall. The museum’s artifacts, videos, and reconstructions give great insight into the life of a Roman Soldier and the building of the wall at the northerly boundary of the Roman Empire. Their award-winning 3D film illustrates the military and civil engineering accomplishments of the Roman’s in Britain. 

After lunch, make your way to Vindolanda. Vindolanda is an amazing working archaeological dig site to the south of Hadrian’s Wall. There were 9 forts built on the site over the 400 years of the Roman occupancy. Each day during the summer, treasures are uncovered by volunteer excavators. The on-site museum, extended in 2018, displays the best of the artifacts. You will have time to wander through the fort, imagining the sights and sounds that the building walls would have seen and heard. After the trip to Vindolanda, continue along Hadrian’s Wall to see the spectacular Fell End, Sunny Rigg, Great Chester, and finally Steel Rigg. Then, turn around and return to the Lake District.
