Sand painting is a unique art form, typical of West Africa. Here, artists don't work with traditional brushes or pigments, but with fine sand, either natural or colored, collected from the desert, beaches, or various landscapes across the country. It is a meticulous practice that requires patience and precision, and it allows artists to bring to life portraits, landscapes, or scenes from everyday life.

During this one-hour workshop, you will be introduced to this fascinating technique alongside experienced artisans, who will guide you step by step in creating your own painting.

Workshop schedule:

Introduction to sand art – The workshop begins with an overview of this artistic tradition: its origins, the different types of sand used, and the stories they tell.

Choosing your design – You select the drawing or pattern you want to create: portrait, landscape, decorative motif, etc.

Introduction to the technique – You will learn how to prepare the base (canvas or cardboard coated with glue) and then how to carefully apply the sand, color by color.

Guided creation – With the artist’s help, you will gradually apply the different shades of sand, learning the precise techniques that give the painting depth and harmony.

Finishing touches and tips – Once your work is complete, the artist will share tips on how to preserve it and bring it back home intact.
