The Roman Tour of Central Belgrade explores the rich Roman heritage in Serbia, tracing back to its integration into the Roman Empire during the reign of Octavian Augustus. This historic confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers, where Romans established a military camp atop a hill, marks the birthplace of Singidunum.
The civil settlement that later developed on the southern side of the IV Flavia Legion’s camp highlights the strategic importance of this location. Emperor Trajan’s passage through Singidunum at the dawn of the first century, initiating his grand military campaign against the Dacians, signifies the city’s pivotal role in Roman military strategy. Under Trajan’s rule, Singidunum was elevated to the status of a municipium, further solidified by the construction of a monumental bridge across the Danube at Kladovo, a testament to Roman engineering prowess. The territory of modern Serbia, with Singidunum at its heart, was a crucial part of the empire, not only for its abundant mines but also as the birthplace of 18 Roman emperors, including the notable Constantine the Great and Justinian the Great. The legacy of Emperor Jovian, born in Singidunum, marks a significant chapter in the city’s Roman history. Over 440 years of Roman rule brought about the construction of numerous civil structures characteristic of Roman cities – baths, insulae, forums, villas, and more, encapsulating the architectural and cultural sophistication of Roman urban development. Our Small Roman Tour starts from Studentski Trg, near the Captain Miša’s Mansion. The journey continues through Kalemegdan Park, where historical layers of Belgrade’s past, including the Roman period, are palpable in the remnants of fortifications, gates, and the rich narrative of the city’s evolution from a Roman stronghold to a vibrant modern metropolis. This journey through Belgrade’s Roman past will also highlight the city’s strategic significance, viewed from Kalemegdan Fortress overlooking the “Barbaric” northern banks of the Danube, a frontier of trade and conflict with Rome. The tour’s progression into the Upper City brings stories of the Roman fortifications, offering insights into the seamless blend of cultural epochs that define Belgrade.
Exploring remains of Roman Singidunum culminates in an exploration of Belgrade’s historical core, from ancient Roman remnants to landmarks of Serbian medieval, Ottoman, and modern periods. By visiting the Cathedral Church dedicated to Archangel Michael, and exploring the Konak of Princess Ljubica, you’ll gain an understanding of Belgrade’s complex historical narrative. Small Roman Tour, concluding at Republic Square, entwines Belgrade’s diverse heritage, from its Roman origins to its role in the national revival. This travel experience offers a profound appreciation for the city’s historical journey, highlighting the enduring influence of Roman civilization on Belgrade’s cultural and architectural landscape.
