Embark on a 4-day, 90 km sea kayak crossing from Paraty to Ubatuba along the wild Joatinga Peninsula, inside the Cairuçu Environmental Protection Area (APA Cairuçu) — one of the last intact stretches of Atlantic Rainforest coast in Brazil. This expedition is designed for experienced sea kayakers who want a long, raw, and visually stunning route far from any tourist circuit.

Begin at Jabaquara Beach — Aqua Terra's home base in Paraty — and head south toward the Ponta da Joatinga, the dramatic headland that marks the boundary between the sheltered waters of Paraty Bay and the open Atlantic Ocean. Once past this threshold, the character of the journey changes completely: exposed coastline, ocean swell, wind-shaped cliffs, and a succession of remote beaches that are accessible only by sea or by long jungle trails.

Launch with a safety briefing and gear check before paddling across the bay past Cocos Island and Sarnambi to reach Cajaiba, where camp is set up and dinner prepared. Push along exposed cliffs and isolated beaches with greater wind and swell exposure, arriving at Martins de Sa — a wild, roadless beach where a small caiçara fishing community still lives in traditional style.

Take the expedition through open-sea sections past coves and sea cliffs, passing in front of the Saco Bravo Waterfall (a stop if conditions allow), and reach the caiçara village of Ponta Negra for the night. Cover the final stretch through preserved beaches including Galhetas before arriving at Camburi for a closing lunch by the sea.

Throughout the route, caiçara communities appear like time capsules — tiny fishing settlements reachable only by trail or by water, where generations have lived from the sea with quiet hospitality that adds a genuine human layer to the journey. Spend nights beach camping under wide-open skies, with hot meals prepared by your guide and the kind of deep silence that resets your senses completely.

This is a participatory expedition: paddlers are expected to help launch and retrieve kayaks, assist with camp setup and breakdown, and contribute in the expedition kitchen. This collaborative approach is central to the expedition culture and keeps the experience grounded and authentic.

Daily paddling averages approximately 5 hours, covering roughly 20 to 25 km per day depending on conditions. Wind, swell, and tidal currents can significantly affect effort levels on exposed sections. The guide — certified ACA Coastal Kayaking Level 3 and WFA (Wilderness First Aid) — may adjust the route at any time to prioritize group safety.
