Explore the Caucasus Mountains on a day trip from Tbilisi. Visit the Jvari Monastery, Ananuri Fortress, and Gudauri, and climb to the Gergeti Trinity Church at the foot of Mount Kazbek.
Begin your journey at the Jvari Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stand on a mountaintop and take in the iconic view of the ancient capital Mtskheta and the confluence of the emerald Aragvi and muddy Kura Rivers. Learn how Georgia adopted Christianity and experience the incredible peace of this place.
Continue into the mountains and stop at the Zhinvali Reservoir to admire its incredible turquoise color. Immediately beyond, find the Ananuri Fortress, the former residence of the formidable Aragvi eristavi. Climb the watchtowers, admire the ancient bas-reliefs on the temple walls, and uncover the dark secrets of this outpost.
Next, stop for lunch in the Pasanauri region, the birthplace of authentic Georgian khinkali. Sample authentic local cuisine (additional charge).
As you ascend higher into the mountains, pass the Gudauri ski resort and stop at the Friendship of Nations Arch observation deck. Built at an altitude of 2,384 meters on the edge of a cliff, it offers breathtaking views of the "Devil's Valley" and a deep gorge.
The final and most dramatic point of the route is the village of Stepantsminda at the foot of Mount Kazbek. Here, switch to all-wheel drive SUVs (delikas) and climb to the Trinity Church in Gergeti. This secluded temple against the backdrop of snow-capped peaks is Georgia's calling card. The sense of freedom and scale here is simply overwhelming.
After a walk and a dose of inspiration, comfortably return to Tbilisi, taking with you hundreds of striking photos and a love for the Caucasus Mountains.
