Discover Nara on a private walking tour. Explore the Higashimuki Shopping Arcade, enjoy a sukiyaki lunch, visit Nara Park, and admire the Todai-ji Temple.
Begin your journey just steps from Kintetsu Nara Station, at the Higashimuki Shopping Arcade, a covered pedestrian street that has been the commercial heart of Nara for centuries. Unlike the souvenir-heavy streets closer to the park, Higashimuki is where locals come for everyday life: traditional confectionery shops, crafts, pharmacies, and small restaurants tucked between modern storefronts.

Walk through the arcade at a relaxed pace, pointing out hidden gems and sharing the stories behind Nara's unique position as a city that has remained deeply traditional while quietly modernizing. This is the ideal warm-up to understand Nara as a living city — not just a collection of monuments.

Midway through your tour, sit down to a proper lunch at Goku, one of the city's most respected sukiyaki restaurants. Sukiyaki — thinly sliced beef simmered in a rich, sweetened soy broth and dipped in raw egg — is one of Japan's great comfort foods, and Goku executes it beautifully.

Your guide will explain the etiquette, the history of the dish, and help you navigate the meal if it's your first time. This is not a tourist lunch stop — it's the kind of place locals bring family for special occasions. Nara Prefecture is home to Yamato beef, a premium wagyu variety, which makes this region a particularly fitting place to experience sukiyaki at its finest.

After lunch, make your way into the expansive grounds of Nara Park — over 500 hectares of open parkland that has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage buffer zone. The park is famously home to approximately 1,200 wild sika deer, considered sacred messengers of the gods since the 8th century.

Your guide will share the cultural and spiritual significance of the deer in Japanese history, and you'll have plenty of time to interact with them naturally in the park setting. Unlike staged animal experiences, this is a genuinely wild encounter — the deer roam freely and have co-existed peacefully with visitors for over a millennium. Your guide will also point out seasonal highlights: cherry blossoms in spring, the annual antler-cutting ceremony in autumn, and the quiet magic of the park in the early afternoon light.

The centerpiece of your tour is Todai-ji, one of the most awe-inspiring structures in all of Japan. Built in the 8th century on the orders of Emperor Shomu, the Great Buddha Hall (Daibutsuden) is the world's largest wooden building — and inside stands Vairocana, a bronze Buddha standing nearly 15 meters tall, cast in 752 AD.

Your guide will walk you through the temple's history: its founding, its two destructions and reconstructions, its role as the head temple of all provincial Buddhist temples in Japan, and what it meant — and still means — for Japanese civilization. Unlike a self-guided visit, you'll leave understanding not just what you saw, but why it exists and why it still matters.
