Discover Osaka’s 7,000‑year history in 150 minutes on a historian‑led walk. Using maps and modern landmarks, explore vanished capitals, lost temples, and the landscapes that shaped Osaka Castle.
Osaka is a city built on layers — ancient shorelines, forgotten capitals, medieval fortresses, and the battlefields that shaped Japan’s destiny. On this immersive 150‑minute walking tour, a local historian guides you through 7,000 years of Osaka’s human story, revealing the hidden landscapes beneath the modern city.

You will tour the northern tip of the Uemachi Plateau, the ancient ridge that once divided sea from land. Using maps and reconstructions, we bring back the world of early settlers, Jōmon hunter‑gatherers, and Yayoi agriculturalists who first shaped this landscape. Standing at modern landmarks, you’ll see how this ridge created natural harbors, trade routes, and the conditions that made Osaka Japan’s earliest international gateway.

We start at Tanimachi 4‑Chome, where we “time‑slip” back 7,000 years by comparing the present‑day cityscape with the vanished shoreline that once defined the region. In nearby Hōenzaka, we explore the site of Naniwa’s state warehouses — the heart of a bustling port that connected Japan to the Korean Peninsula and China more than 1,500 years ago.

At the Naniwa Palace Site, we step into the footprint of the 7th‑century capital. Here, emperors, envoys, and reformers shaped the early Japanese state. You’ll learn why this ground was chosen for political power and how the surrounding landscape supported a thriving court.

The story then shifts to the medieval era as we visit the former grounds of Ishiyama Hongan‑ji, the massive Buddhist temple‑fortress that dominated the region for over a century. Standing on quiet modern streets, we reconstruct the scale of a stronghold that resisted warlords for generations before finally surrendering after a decade‑long siege by Oda Nobunaga.

Finally, we enter Osaka Castle’s Honmaru to explore how the landscape influenced both the castle’s construction and the outcome of the Winter and Summer Sieges. Using maps and modern landmarks, we trace how the terrain shaped the placement of Sanada‑maru, the Tennoji battlefield, and the final stand of the Toyotomi clan. You’ll see how geography and strategy intertwined to determine the fate of Osaka.

The tour concludes with a peaceful walk through the castle gardens, where seasonal scenery frames the stone walls and moats. Here, we reflect on the long arc of Osaka’s story — from ancient ridge to imperial port to fortress city — all within a single walk.
