From Cusco: 4-Day Manu Cloud Forest Birdwatching Tour

Discover the diverse birdlife of the Manu region on a 4-day birdwatching tour from Cusco. Explore the cloud forest, visit an Andean Cock-of-the-Rock lek, and stay at the Wayqecha Biological Station.
Day 1: Cusco – Acjanaco Pass – Wayqecha Biological Station

Depart early from Cusco and travel through scenic Andean valleys toward the Manu region. Along the route, make birdwatching stops to look for endemic species such as Creamy-crested Spinetail and Chestnut-breasted Mountain-Finch, as well as Cinereous Conebill, Golden-billed Saltator, Band-tailed Seedeater, and Sierra-Finches.

Continue to Acjanaco Pass and descend through changing elevations into the upper Manu cloud forest. Along this remarkable transition, look for species such as Mountain Caracara, Shining Sunbeam, Bar-winged Cinclodes, Puna Thistletail, Tufted Tit-Tyrant, flowerpiercers, and hawks. The changing altitude creates different habitats within a relatively short distance, making this route especially rewarding for birdwatchers. Arrive at Wayqecha Biological Station and spend the night surrounded by pristine cloud forest.

Day 2: Wayqecha – Manu Cloud Forest – Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge

Begin the morning with birdwatching in the montane forest, searching for Crimson-mantled Woodpecker, Blue-banded Toucanet, and several hummingbird species. Explore mixed-species flocks along the Manu Road, with opportunities to see woodcreepers, flycatchers, tanagers, warblers, wrens, parrots, and other Andean species.

Continue descending toward the subtropical cloud forest as new habitats and bird species appear along the route. Arrive at Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge and explore the surrounding forest during additional birdwatching sessions. The lodge provides an ideal base for observing the rich birdlife of this transition zone.

Day 3: Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge

Explore the forests around the lodge and nearby sections of the Manu Road. A highlight of the day is visiting an Andean Cock-of-the-Rock lek, where you may observe the spectacular courtship displays of these iconic birds in their natural habitat.

Continue birdwatching for hummingbirds, tanagers, flycatchers, woodpeckers, quetzals, motmots, and other cloud-forest species. Keep watch for large raptors such as Solitary Eagle and Black-and-chestnut Eagle. The varied forest surroundings also offer opportunities to observe species that are difficult to find elsewhere. If conditions allow, enjoy an evening birdwatching session searching for Rufescent Screech-Owl and Lyre-tailed Nightjar.

Day 4: Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge – Manu Road – Cusco

Enjoy a final morning of birdwatching in the lower Manu cloud forest, looking for species missed during the previous days. Begin the return journey to Cusco, making selected stops along the Manu Road when suitable birdwatching opportunities arise. Continue through the changing Andean landscapes, reviewing the different habitats visited during the expedition. Conclude the four-day birdwatching experience in Cusco.
