This full-day trek takes you away from crowded popular trails inside Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and deep into the secluded primeval peak forest of Yaozi Village in the Wuling Mountains. It is a pure hiking adventure with unspoiled nature and few visitors. You will discover natural wonders, ancient fortress relics, wild mountain ecosystems and authentic Tujia food for an immersive deep mountain experience.
We start our hike early in the morning at the Great Oxygen Bar Square. Leaving the busy tourist zone behind, we stroll gently onto quiet mountain trails of Yaozi Village. You will breathe fresh air amid lush greenery and pass the relics of Eagle Fort. Weathered stone steps and old ruins carry rich mountain history, making the hike relaxing and restorative.
We descend deeper into the valley to reach Baiying Valley, famous for its remarkable echo. Whisper or call softly, and echoes bounce across layered cliff faces, creating a serene, ethereal mood. Along the way, admire striking rock formations including Golden Snail Reaching for Heaven and layered tower-shaped peaks, shaped by natural forces over millions of years.
The highlight of the tour is the dramatic Eagle Beak Cliff Suspended Boardwalk. Built along towering vertical cliffs, this walkway offers sweeping views. Hold the mountain iron chains and gaze down into deep valleys and rolling sea of peaks. On misty mornings, clouds drift among summits like a fairyland — ideal for cloud-chasing and panoramic photography.
Cross the natural stone arch Sky Bridge and continue uphill to Pointing to the River Viewing Platform, Yaozi Village’s highest overlook. Enjoy a full 360° panorama over the entire Wuling peak forest. On clear days, stone pillars stand grand and imposing; when fog rolls in, mist wraps around ridges, resembling a classic Chinese ink painting. At the summit, visit the ruins of Jiegong Temple and learn the history of Western Hunan’s Tujia chieftains. Stand before the solitary Suobiao Rock to witness nature’s incredible artistry. The forest remains largely untouched, where you may spot birds and small wildlife.
In the afternoon, pick one of two downhill routes. Choose the Big Loop Trail to wander through thick secondary forests, soaking up fresh oxygen and quiet wilderness. Or opt for the Jinbian Stream waterside route, walking beside gurgling streams under cool tree shade to ease hiking fatigue.
We finish at either Shuirongmen or Laomowan to savour genuine Tujia dishes, the perfect ending to your mountain adventure. Far from mass tourist routes, this journey combines dramatic cliff scenery and peaceful valleys, blending nature, history, ecology and local cuisine.
