Discover the dramatic beauty and deep cultural significance of the West MacDonnell Ranges (Tjoritja) on this unforgettable full-day adventure from Alice Springs. This nature-rich journey combines spectacular gorges, refreshing waterholes, ancient Aboriginal sites, and iconic Central Australian landscapes — all at a relaxed pace.

Depart Alice Springs and travel west into West MacDonnell National Park, where towering red quartzite ranges rise from the desert floor. Known to the Traditional Owners as Tjoritja, this region is rich in Dreamtime stories and remains a place of deep spiritual and cultural importance.

Your first stop is Simpsons Gap (Rungutjirpa), a peaceful gorge with a permanent waterhole that attracts native wildlife. Keep watch for the elusive black-footed rock wallaby, often seen resting among the rocky slopes, along with birdlife and other desert species. Your guide will share insights into the cultural significance of this sacred site.

Continue to the striking Standley Chasm (Angkerle Atwatye), a narrow gorge framed by towering rock walls that rise up to 80 metres high. As sunlight filters through the chasm, the rocks glow with rich reds and oranges, creating one of Central Australia’s most photogenic natural wonders.

Next, arrive at Ellery Creek Big Hole (Udepata), one of the region’s most beautiful and popular swimming spots. Surrounded by sheer cliffs and sandy creek beds, this permanent waterhole offers the perfect place to cool off with a refreshing swim. Enjoy a relaxed picnic lunch in this scenic setting, taking time to soak up the tranquillity of the Outback.

The journey continues to the Ochre Pits, a vivid and culturally significant site where colourful mineral-rich clay has been collected for thousands of years. Still used today in traditional ceremonies and art, these striking cliffs offer a fascinating insight into the enduring cultural practices of local Aboriginal people.

Your final stop is Ormiston Gorge (Kwartatuma), one of the most impressive gorges in the park. Towering rock walls, a permanent waterhole, and scenic walking tracks make this a highlight of the day. Enjoy time to explore, swim, or simply relax and take in the serenity of this ancient landscape.

Throughout the day, travel in comfort with an experienced local guide who brings the region to life through stories of geology, wildlife, and Aboriginal culture. With a balance of guided walks, swimming opportunities, and scenic stops, this tour is ideal for travellers seeking an authentic and immersive Outback experience.

Return to Alice Springs in the late afternoon with a deeper appreciation for the natural beauty, cultural heritage, and timeless landscapes of the West MacDonnell Ranges.
