Gondar: 3-Day Simien Mountains Trek with Guide

Embark on a 3-day trek in the Simien Mountains from Gondar. Hike through stunning landscapes, encounter wildlife, and camp under the stars.
Day 1: Gondar – Simien Mountains – Sankaber (3,200 m)

Drive from Gondar to the Simien Mountains National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On the way, stop at Felasha Village (Ethiopian Jewish village) and enjoy the scenic landscape.

After about 2 hours of driving, reach Debark (2,800 m), where your guide will arrange trekking permits, pick up your local guide and scout, and handle all park formalities.

From Debark, continue into the Simien Mountains National Park to begin your first day of trekking. Hike for 2–3 hours to the Sankaber campsite (3,200 m) to acclimatize to the altitude. The trail follows the edge of the escarpment, offering stunning views of the dramatic highlands. Encounter Gelada baboon troops, endemic to Ethiopia.

Day 2: Sankaber – Gich (3,600 m)

After breakfast, begin your trek toward Gich village, passing through beautiful valleys and highland terrain. Along the way, visit the Jinbar Waterfall (also known as Nigus Aysmush Viewpoint). In the rainy season, the waterfall drops over 500 meters into a deep gorge — a truly impressive sight. Even during the dry season, the views remain magnificent.

Trekking Time: 5–6 hours

Day 3: Gich – Imet Gogo (3,926 m) – Gondar

After an early breakfast, trek to the spectacular viewpoint of Imet Gogo (3,926 m) — one of the most breathtaking spots in the Simien Mountains. Enjoy panoramic 360° views of the rugged peaks and deep valleys. If you’re lucky, you may spot the bearded vulture (Lammergeyer), famous for its 3-meter wingspan and majestic flight.

After the visit, return to the main road, where your vehicle will be waiting to drive you back to Gondar.
