Day 1 – Paro Market & Traditional Bhutanese Cooking
️ Local Market | Discover Bhutan's Ingredients
Meet your guide in Paro and begin with a visit to a local farmers' or produce market, depending on the market day. Walk among stalls selling vegetables, chillies, cheese, rice, herbs and other locally used ingredients.
Learn how Bhutanese cooks select ingredients for everyday meals and discover how food differs between regions. Bhutan Tourism notes that rice, chillies, cheese, buckwheat and maize are important parts of Bhutanese cuisine.
Hands-on Cooking Class
Continue to a local home, farmhouse or cooking venue for a hands-on Bhutanese cooking session.
Under the guidance of a local cook, help prepare a selection of traditional dishes such as Ema Datshi (chilli and cheese), Kewa Datshi (potato and cheese), seasonal vegetable dishes, red rice and momos. Bhutan Tourism specifically highlights cooking experiences involving momos and Ema Datshi.
Traditional Lunch
Sit down with your hosts and enjoy the meal you helped prepare. Learn about Bhutanese dining customs and the role of food in family and community life.
️ Day 2 – Thimphu Food Market & Bhutanese Kitchen
Thimphu Market Experience
Travel to Thimphu and explore a local market or food-focused shopping area. Browse fresh vegetables, chillies, rice, cheese, dried foods and locally produced products.
You can also visit the CSI Market, a Bhutanese marketplace featuring locally made and grown foods, tea, edible products and crafts.
Bhutanese Cooking Workshop
Meet your local chef or host and prepare another selection of Bhutanese dishes. Learn basic preparation techniques, how chillies are incorporated into dishes and how cheese-based stews are cooked.
Depending on the seasonal menu, dishes may include Jasha Maru, Phaksha Paa, Datshi, red rice, vegetables and momos.
Traditional Meal & Suja
Enjoy a relaxed Bhutanese meal followed by a chance to taste Suja (butter tea) or another traditional local beverage.
The exact menu varies according to the host, season and available ingredients.
Day 3 – Village Farm-to-Table Experience
Journey into Rural Bhutan
Leave the city and travel towards a nearby village or farmhouse. Enjoy views of fields, traditional homes and mountain landscapes along the way.
From Local Produce to the Plate
With your local host, learn how seasonal ingredients are used in everyday Bhutanese cooking. Depending on the season and farm, you may see vegetables, chillies, herbs or rice being cultivated.
Take part in simple food preparation before sitting down for a home-style Bhutanese lunch.
Family Meal & Cultural Exchange
Share a relaxed meal with your hosts and experience Bhutanese hospitality in a traditional setting. Ask questions about recipes, family food traditions and regional differences.
Before returning to your hotel, enjoy a final cup of Bhutanese tea and say goodbye to your hosts.
