Düsseldorf Altstadt Tour with a Landscape Architect

A guided walk through Düsseldorf's Old Town led by a practicing landscape architect, tracing its history from medieval roots to postwar rebuilding and beyond.
I'm a landscape architect with a degree in Stadtentwicklung (urban development), and I work on projects in this region professionally. This walk covers the Altstadt as I actually read it: a layered piece of urban design shaped by medieval origins, growth under the Electors Palatine, wartime destruction, contested postwar rebuilding choices, and a landmark 1990s infrastructure project that changed how the whole city relates to its river.
Düsseldorf started small — a fishing settlement at the mouth of the Düssel, granted town rights in 1288. Its rise came later, when the Electors Palatine made it their residence town from the late 16th century onward, which is when much of the Altstadt's street grid and public squares took shape. Understanding that layer matters, because it explains why the "old town" you're walking through today isn't a single historical moment — it's several centuries stacked on top of each other, and then partly erased and rebuilt.
We start at Burgplatz, where the Düsseldorf Schloss once stood. A fire in 1872 destroyed most of it; only the Schlossturm survived. Its solitary presence on the square is a good entry point into how much of the "historic" Altstadt is careful reconstruction rather than untouched fabric. From there we move to Marktplatz and the Rathaus, where I'll point out how the square's proportions and sightlines were deliberately restored after 1945, following decisions about what to rebuild and what to let go.
A central stop is the Rheinuferpromenade, one of the most awarded urban redevelopment projects in Germany. Until the early 1990s, a six-lane highway ran along the riverbank, cutting the Altstadt off from the Rhine entirely. Between 1990 and 1993, the city buried that highway in a 1.9 km tunnel, and architects Niklaus Fritschi, Benedikt Stahl, and Günter Baum redesigned the surface above it — the plane tree allée, the wave-patterned basalt paving referencing the river's movement, the terraced steps at Burgplatz. It won the Deutscher Städtebaupreis in 1998, and I can walk you through exactly why it's still studied today as a model for reclaiming urban waterfronts from traffic.
We continue past St. Lambertus Basilica, whose twisted spire is a genuine structural quirk — warped timber from a historic fire, not a design choice — before a short detour into Carlstadt, the 18th-century planned quarter, useful as a contrast to the organic medieval streets we started in. We finish in the Hofgarten, Düsseldorf's oldest public park and an early example of English landscape garden design in the Rhineland, a deliberate close against the hard urban design we've just walked through.
