See Shirakawa-go's snow village glow on one of only 4 light-up nights in January 2027. Entry is reservation-only, so we take you in from Nagoya, with a stop in old Takayama.

Only 4 nights a year, Shirakawa-go's snow-covered thatched farmhouses glow under the lights like a real-life snow globe. The 2027 light-up runs on January 11, 17, 24 and 31, from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM. Entry is by advance reservation only: no same-day tickets, and no public bus back after the event. This small-group tour (max 13 guests) handles the ride and the entry from Nagoya, with a stop in old-town Takayama on the way.

Meet behind BIC CAMERA at Nagoya Station West Exit, or get picked up from your hotel within 3 km of the station. This is a shared tour, so please arrive 10 minutes early.

--- 12:30 PM | Hida-Takayama Old Town | approx. 2 hours ---
Walk the Sanmachi streets, the Edo-era merchant quarter known as the "Little Kyoto of Hida." Lunch is on your own, and a bowl of Takayama ramen is the local classic. If snow slows the roads, time here may be shortened or skipped to protect your light-up time.

--- 2:30 PM | Drive to Shirakawa-go | approx. 1 hour ---
The road climbs into deep snow country. Shirakawa-go has no train station, so a car or bus is the only way in.

--- 3:30 PM | Shirakawa-go Ogimachi Village | approx. 2 hours ---
Explore the UNESCO World Heritage village by daylight. Ogimachi is the largest of the three heritage villages, ringed by mountains and the Sho River. Its steep "gassho" roofs are built to carry heavy snow.

--- 5:30 PM | Shirakawa-go Winter Light-Up | approx. 2.5 hours ---
As night falls, the lights come on around Wada House, Myozenji Temple and the lanes in between. Paths are icy and dark in spots, so wear snow boots, bring a small flashlight and watch for snow sliding off roofs. There are no trash bins in the village; please carry your trash with you.

--- 8:00 PM | Return to Nagoya | approx. 2.5 hours ---
We regroup at 8:00 PM and head back. Expect to reach Nagoya Station around 10:30 PM, with hotel drop-offs in order between 10:00 and 11:00 PM.

Which dates does this tour run?

Do I need to book light-up entry separately?
No. Entry is reservation-only, and your tour seat covers arrival by tour vehicle. The Shiroyama observation deck needs a separate ticket that is not sold on its own, so it's not included.

How cold will it be?
Often below 0°C at night. Wear waterproof boots, gloves and a hat, and bring hand warmers. A rain poncho is safer than an umbrella in the wind.

Where can I eat?
Have lunch in Takayama. Many Shirakawa-go shops close by late afternoon, so bring snacks for the evening.

What if the light-up is canceled?
If the organizers cancel the event, customers will get full refund.
