Explore Xunantunich and kayak through the Nohoch Che'en cave system on a guided tour from Belize City. Cross the Mopan River on a hand-cranked ferry and learn about Maya history from your guide.
Your adventure begins with a unique crossing of the Mopan River aboard a traditional hand-cranked ferry. As you make your way across, enjoy the peaceful jungle surroundings before arriving at Xunantunich, meaning “Stone Woman,” one of Belize’s most impressive ancient Maya sites.
Explore the ancient plazas, temples, and structures of this once-thriving Maya city while your guide brings its fascinating history to life. Discover how the Maya lived, worshipped, traded, and celebrated within this remarkable civilization.
The highlight of your visit is El Castillo, the towering centerpiece of Xunantunich and one of the tallest ancient Maya structures in Belize. Climb toward the top and take in breathtaking panoramic views across the Cayo District and surrounding countryside. On a clear day, you may even catch views toward neighboring Guatemala.
From the heights of an ancient Maya city, your adventure continues into the lush Belizean rainforest at Nohoch Che'en, also known as the Caves Branch Outpost. Here, the experience takes you underground into a world of cool waters, limestone formations, and dramatic cave chambers.
Grab your paddle and prepare to get wet as you journey through the cave system. As you venture deeper underground, your guide will share the fascinating history and spiritual significance these caves held for the ancient Maya.
The Maya believed caves were sacred spaces and entrances to Xibalba, the underworld. These mysterious chambers were used for important ceremonies and rituals, and ancient offerings were left behind as part of their spiritual practices. Along the journey, you may encounter ceremonial artifacts that have remained within the caves for centuries, creating an incredible connection to Belize’s ancient past.
This adventure combines the best of Belize’s history, culture, nature, and excitement. From crossing the Mopan River on a hand-cranked ferry and exploring the magnificent ruins of Xunantunich to climbing El Castillo and paddling through sacred underground caves, every part of the experience offers something unforgettable.
Perfect for travelers looking to go beyond ordinary sightseeing, this tour lets you experience Belize from the mountaintops to the depths of the rainforest. Come ready to explore, get wet, discover ancient history, and create memories that will last long after your Belize adventure comes to an end.
