Maputo: Art Walking Tour

Discover Maputo through the eyes of its artists and architects on a walking tour exploring Malangatana, Pancho Guedes, Art Deco buildings, historic landmarks and contemporary Mozambican art.
Explore a different side of Maputo on a walking tour dedicated to the city's art, architecture and cultural history.

Begin at the National History Museum, one of Maputo's most important cultural landmarks. From outside, admire the building's architecture and a mural by Malangatana, one of Mozambique's most celebrated artists. Your guide will also introduce you to the work and legacy of Renata Sadimba, one of the country's most important contemporary ceramic artists.

Continue on foot towards Núcleo de Arte, a unique artistic community where Mozambican artists come together to create, exhibit their work, exchange ideas and spend time together. Depending on the day's activity, you may have the opportunity to see artists working in their studios and discover a variety of contemporary Mozambican artworks.

Along the way, Maputo's streets become an open-air architecture gallery. Admire examples of Art Deco and other distinctive architectural styles while learning how the city's architecture reflects different periods of its history.

The walk continues to the Casa dos Azulejos, an older building distinguished by its striking blue-tiled façade, before reaching Villa Algarve. Now abandoned, Villa Algarve is one of Maputo's most intriguing architectural landmarks, with an impressive and atmospheric exterior.

You will then pass the Wedding Palace and the Greek Orthodox Church before discovering another remarkable example of Maputo's architectural heritage: the building known as "the Dragon”, designed by Pancho Guedes. One of Mozambique's most influential architects, Guedes developed a highly distinctive architectural language that can be seen throughout Maputo.

Continue through the Polana area, taking in the historic Polana Hotel and another of Pancho Guedes' memorable creations, the “Three Giraffes” building. The route then leads past the Lemon Squeezer Church before ending at FEIMA, a popular space where local artists and craftspeople display and sell their work.

Throughout the walk, your guide connects the buildings, artworks and people you encounter to the wider story of Maputo, giving you a deeper understanding of the city's creative identity.
