Enjoy stunning scenery but be prepared for challenging terrain. A standard 7-8 day itinerary covers the long drives and a day or two exploring the lake, best done in Spring (Mar-May) or Autumn (Sep-Nov) for clear weather.

On Day 1, travel from Kathmandu to Kohalpur, a long drive of approximately 10-12 hours. Head west, seeing views of major peaks, settling into lower country. On Day 2, continue from Kohalpur to Mangma/Surkhet, a long drive of approximately 8-10 hours. Continue west on better roads, reaching a major hub.

On Day 3, travel from Surkhet to Mugu (Gamgadhi/Talcha area), a challenging off-road drive of approximately 7-9 hours. The real adventure begins with rough, hilly tracks towards Rara National Park.
